I do like honeycombs!

I love the shape of a honeycomb!

For this page in my 3.5" x 5.5" Moleskine Watercolor Journal,

I decided to make a background.

.

I used my 5" x 8" Mini Honeycomb Stencil and placed it where I wanted it on the page.

Using a pencil I drew the shapes, creating the string.

.

Normally, I would then trace over the pencil lines with a pen to

create a more hand drawn honeycomb shape.

Then I would draw lines, as shown in the above picture, to create my sections.

Then I draw the semi-circles to form each petal.

.

Here, you can see how I finished the pattern.

I did shade each flower using a pencil and tortillon.

There are so many other ways to further this design ~

add color to each flower, fill in the background with all black or

a different color altogether. 

If you don't like the idea of each honeycomb shape being the same pattern,

you can mix it up so each is entirely different.

So many choices!!!

Expect the Unexpected!

When I first started this piece I had something else in

mind for the end result!

But really, what fun is that when you get right down to it? I think

that in order to enjoy the whole process of art is to expect

the unexpected ~ you will never be disappointed.

I started by placing the stencil on my blank page and using a pencil.

I drew the small squares that would ultimately become my pattern.

The tangle pattern is called W2 and is an original zentangle pattern.

I then just drew any pattern that came into my head to complete the process.

I then used two of my most favorite colors to paint the ribbons. 

BUT, I wasn't entirely pleased. The piece became a bit dark for me ~

why? because I "worried" it and didn't leave it alone.

I had actually been playing around with some circles and decided to cut the circle out.

I then placed that on top of my piece and it instantly became brighter for me.

THAT'S when I stopped!!!!

Totally unexpected!

Fragments and Reticula . . . How I draw Ole!

I really like drawing Barbara Finwall’s Zentangle® pattern Ole.

I found it was easier for me to deconstruct it a bit more ~

just me and how I process some patterns.

I found that it actually fit into what is being call a fragment ~ part of a pattern that 

when placed into a reticula, or grid, it creates a bigger pattern.

Here is what I did . . .

I love to draw on watercolor paper, so I took a sheet and cut several 

2" squares. Big enough to work on, but not so big that it takes too much time

to complete. I am about practicing right now ~ for me it's calming.

I drew a square and then I divided it into four sections with my pen.

Then, with a pencil, I lightly sectioned off each of the squares,

making more of a grid to work with.

Then I placed a circle in the middle of each square.

.

I chose from the chart G-1 (picture above) and began drawing my pattern.

.

Then I decided to use H-1 and I-1 to create a different look.

The pattern Ole is still the same concept.

.

Here is another drawing using the pattern Ole.

This is on a 3.5" square watercolor tile.

The whole idea for me is to draw and relax and to just have fun.

I have to be really honest . . .

Life totally happened all around me and I completely

forgot about this blog!

What have I been doing? OMGosh ~ EVERYTHING!

But, I'm not going to bore you with it ~ hehehe.

I will let you know though, that I have developed several

different tools that I have been using for my art.

As I have said before . . .

"I am not a purest in any one form ~ BUT ~

I am a purest in what feels good when I create,

whatever the method!"

For this post, I'll start with this part of what has been happening.

I have developed the idea of using "Stencils As Strings" and have had

more fun pursuing this project.
